The city of Westmount wants to ban gas-powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers in favour of electric versions.
“We want to reduce emissions and we want to bring down the noise,” said Mayor Christina Smith in an interveiw with CTV.
The hope, she said, is homeowners will instead use the next-generation electric lawn and garden tools, which are cleaner and quieter.
“I cannot at all claim that I'm a trailblazer on this,” she said.
"This is happening all over North America.”
She added she hopes to bring in the new bylaw this spring.
One landscaper told CTV batteries on electric equipment should last longer, adding the machines aren't as strong as gas engines and it'll take longer to complete the work.
John Mastro also said buying new equipment could cost up to $20,000 and clients would pay more.
"Clients that pay $150, $200 a month, now they're gonna have to pay $400 a month. I don't think they know that yet", said Mastro.
