A local news outlet has obtained a video of one of mayor Denis Coderre's political attachés in an embarrassing situation.
Jean-François Thibault was caught on a cellphone camera smoking crystal meth. A report from TVA suggests the video was shot some weeks ago.
The network also reports they caught up with the person who shot the video, who suggests the Thibault had consumed meth before.
Then, TVA caught up with the 62-year-old Thibault himself, who admitted that he consumed meth on two occasions, but didn't like the experience very much.
He also suggested the person who shot the video was out for revenge for some reason.
His LinkedIn account lists Thibault as a Coderre attaché since January 2014, not long after Coderre took office. Before that, he worked on Coderre's 2013 election campaign as an adviser and campaign organizer.
The mayor's office, meantime, said in a statement that Thibault has been fired as a result of the incident.
"The [mayor's office] was made aware of the situation in the last few hours," a statement from Coderre spokesperson Catherine Maurice reads. "This kind of behavior is unacceptable for the mayor of Montreal. This employee no longer is a member of the mayor's team or the mayor's office. We will, however, make sure that this person gets all the help and support necessary".
