Emma Czornobaj, the woman who stopped her car on a highway in Candiac in 2010 to rescue some ducks crossing the road, was back in court Tuesday.
She's appealing her 2014 conviction on charges of criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death.
The incident happened on June 27, 2010 on Highway 30 in Candiac, when Czornobaj, then 21 years old, parked her car in the lefthand lane on Highway 30. Moments later, André Roy and his teenaged daughter Jessie were killed when the motorcycle they were on slammed into the back of Czornobaj's car at full speed.
Pauline Volikakis, Roy's wife and Jessie's mother, also hit the car with her motorcycle and suffered serious injuries.
Czornobaj was sentenced to 90 days in jail, to be served on weekends. She was also barred from having a driver's licence for 10 years, and was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
She has yet to serve any of her jail time.
On Tuesday, Czornobaj's new lawyer, Jean-Francois Bouveret, suggested that while her actions were dangerous and careless, he said that Czornobaj did correctly evaluate the risk of stopping in the lefthand lane, and suggested the jury did not take that into consideration before finding her guilty.
