A couple from Rivière-du-Loup is critical of the way hospital emergency room personnel handled their case after a 37 year old woman, who did not know she was pregnant, gave birth in a hospital toilet.
The woman went to the hospital complaining of stomach pain and bleeding.
The triage nurse did ask if she was pregnant but the woman said no, that her doctor had told her last December that she was premenopausal.
After about three and-a-half hours in the waiting room the woman tells the Journal de Montreal that she went to the washroom and in a matter of seconds delivered a baby girl in the toilet.
Doctors say at almost six pounds the baby was full term and healthy.
Her husband says given what happened, medical staff should have conducted more tests, but the upside is the couple had always thought they were unable to have children and are happy with the outcome.
