Provincial police say a woman was struck and killed after she wandered onto a busy stretch of Highway 40 in Kirkland on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened at around 8:50 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the 40, just before the exit for Chemin Ste-Marie.
She was struck almost instantly, and the crash caused a pileup involving four vehicles. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
It doesn't appear anyone else was seriously hurt.
Investigators closed that stretch of highway along kilometre 49 for several hours. An SQ spokesperson says they're ruling nothing out as their investigation begins — including the possibility the woman, as yet unidentified, may have been suicidal.
It was the second fatal road incident on Montreal Island in as many days — early on Monday morning, a 51-year-old woman was struck and killed by a city bus in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
