The Rocky Horror Show has become a bonafide tradition over at MainLine Theatre... with a cast of 30 and a live quintet playing all the songs from the musical about two clean cut kids who end up a dark, spooky castle party. Steph Mckenna returns as Dr Frank N Furter. The show is on this weekend and next, with a special showing at Halloween. Friday night's show is followed up by a special Halloween edition of Knife Fight Tonight, a local comedy talk show.
I’m moderating the Sunday @ the Segal panel this weekend (Sunday at 11am), kicking off the season with brand-new musical, The Hockey Sweater. It's based on Roch Carrier's classic children’s story about a little Canadiens fan who gets a Maple Leaf jersey in the mail. Roch will be one of the panelists at this event. It's free, there's coffee and food - come say hi!
Elsewhere at the theatre: The Mountaintop, an imagining of Martin Luther King Jr's final night continues at the Segal. And at the Centaur, see the incredible Playing with Fire: The Theo Fleury Story, as well a brand new version of Greek classic Oedipus, this weekend only. Writer Joseph Shragge adapted the show from his wife Lynn Kozak's new translation of Sophocles. They are incorporating three Montreal choirs for this show...so 55 singers in total in addition to 12 acclaimed Montreal actors.
The Braderie de mode quebecoise is on at the Marché Bonsecours all weekend. Some 25,000 people come out over four days to shop discounted items (between 50 to 80 per cent off) from dozens of local fashion designers. There’s women’s apparel from labels like Pinkmuchacha and Saatchi, or you can pick up a coat for the coming cold season, from Furlux, Soia & Kyo or Mackage. Check out the accessories and lines for kids and men, too.
Museum exhibits: Once Upon a Time... a show a show about the Western film genre in visual art. And Houdini at the McCord... a show called Illusions, the Art of Magic. All about the golden age of magic shows, how they advertised them and exploring specific illusions like escapes and... decapitation.
La Ronde: reminder that the fall Fright Fest is on at the amusement park for two more weekends. Take in a zombie march, flee from vampires... and dodge the guy in the hockey mask with a chainsaw. (You have to pay extra for the haunted houses.)
Comedian Tranna Wintour continues her movie screening series (complete with colour commentary from guest panelists) with one of my Halloween faves... Hocus Pocus starring Bette Midler. This is at secret venue Psychic City in the Plateau... once you RSVP, you will get the address. Demand is so high there are two screenings on Saturday!
Take a moment for yourself with a Silent Hike and Chi-Energy guided meditation on Mont Royal this Sunday... perfect to check out the fall foliage! It's on rain or shine, but happily the weather is looking sunny.
The Montreal Burlesque Fest invites dozens of dancers from around the world to Club Soda. Performers on Friday include Wisp Purrs, Kismet Katie and Lilly Lynx. Tomorrow's big draw is the First Lady of Burlesque April March, an octogenarian dancer who has recently published her memoirs.
