There'll be a vote at the next council meeting on new regulations for Montreal's caleche industry.
If they get the green light, drivers will have to take a course on customer service, but there's no requirement about how to drive a caleche.
"The city of Montreal declined CTV's request for an interview. They said in a statement: the caleche industry is an asset to the tourist economy of Old Montreal. The city wants to have a uniform customer service experience, especially with regards to historic and tourist information", said reporter Kelly Greig.
And after a string of highly-publicized incidents involving caleches over the past few summers, the new workers on the job are learning that driving a caleche might not be as easy as it looks.
A new caleche driver tells CTV he has nearly no experience with horses except for working in a horse barn half a century ago.
According to the rules, a driver only needs to prove he or she can manage a horse through a written attestation from the caleche owner.
