City crews were kept busy early Wednesday morning dealing with a major water main break on St. Antoine St., behind the Bell Centre.
The 30-inch pipe was finally closed at around 8:35 a.m., nearly five hours after it burst, resulting in a geyser and a river of water that flooded St. Antoine St. between Peel and de la Montagne Sts.
The water also seeped into the foundations of the Tour des Canadiens condo project currently under construction. Its builders are now assessing the damage.
It's not known what caused the pipe to burst.
Crazy water main break on Saint-Antoine, behind the Bell Centre. No traffic through the area. Tons of water pouring into the foundation of the nearby condo project. #CJAD800 pic.twitter.com/n3rwzsd27z

City crews are apparently searching for the valve to shut the water off. In the meantime there is only one guy here spreading salt with a shovel. Ice is building up along the edge of the new downtown river. Already seen one fall because of it. #CJAD800 pic.twitter.com/onty6FdheG
