Valerie Plante says she's okay with having the Expos come back, but not if it means putting public money toward a new ballpark.
The Projet Montreal mayoral candidate spoke with reporters Wednesday about how her party would deal with the issue of building a new park, should the city get a new major league franchise.
Plante says she would wait for the 2021 election to hold a referendum on whether taxpayers' money should be put toward baseball.
Her team trotted out a prop $500 million dollar cheque, paid to the order of Major League Baseball and signed by mayor Denis Coderre, to represent the taxpayer money he may sink into a new baseball stadium, without telling Montrealers.
"My opponent is negotiating behind closed doors without telling how much money will be invested using Montrealers' money," Plante says. "So our promise: we are not going to spend one penny on building a new stadium without consulting them."
During Monday's city council meeting, Coderre declined to provide an amount it would cost taxpayers to fund a new park.
