The Transportation Safety Board released its report Wednesday into the plane crash on March 29, 2016 that killed seven people in Iles-de-la-Madeleine, including former CJAD 800 commentator Jean Lapierre and several members of his family.
They were on their way to the islands for the funeral of Lapierre's father.
The TSB concluded the pilot's decision to continue with an unstable approach to the landing strip at Iles-de-la-Madeleine airport
"The pilot continued an unstable approach and experienced an aircraft upset at an altitude too low to prevent impact with a ground," TSB chair Kathy Fox told a Montreal news conference Wednesday morning.
The plane, a Mitsubishi MU-2 twin-engine turboprop aircraft, deviated south of the approach path about 1.4 nautical miles west-southwest from the airport, and at around 11:30 a.m. Montreal time, struck the ground in a near-level altitude, killing everyone on board.
Fox also noted the pilot was juggling multiple tasks at the time he was preparing for his approach and landing.
"Several key performance criteria were not stabilized throughout the approach," Fox said. The pilot's workload was very high, as he attempted to reduce his speed, altitude, and rate of descent, complete the necessary checklists, and configure the aircraft for landing.
