Jackhammers broke ground on Monkland Avenue Monday morning beginning a 2 month repaving project from Decarie to Grand Boulevard.
Yan Troung manages the Sushi Start restaurant on Monkland and Girouard and says with no parking and reduced foot traffic - the summer is going to be a slow one.
"We are worried because business goes down 90%, it's not 20% it's like 90% because customers come by car but they can not go in," she says. "It's not really easy to get here."
Projet Montreal city councillor Peter McQueen says though July is peak season for restaurants the street shouldn't be as busy then as when holidays are over.
"I have been assured by our services that the work on the repaving is going to continue through the construction holiday," says McQueen. "So it's certainly a good time at that moment."
Employee Foad at Deppaneur L'Exceptionelle is less concerned because their business isn't ambiance dependant.
"As for a deppaneur like ours, I don't think construction will influence people to take another route for their cigarettes and lottery tickets" he says.
Borough Mayor Russell Copeman says it's a necessary job that should be complete by the time traffic intensifies with the start of school.
"I don't think it makes any sense to be doing that it September when schools, CEGEPs, and universities are back on schedule,' he says. "July in our view is the best time to do it."
