Mayor Denis Coderre says he wants to lower the speed limits right across Montreal, in all boroughs, to 30km/h in residential areas and 40km/h on bigger streets.
Only main arteries would remain at 50 km/h.
"We all agree that if we reduce speed limits it will have an impact, by 30 per cent," said Coderre. "Just from 50 to 40, you reduce by 30 per cent and it's maybe not enough in certain areas."
Coderre is asking for boroughs to cooperate and hopes to have the new speed limits in place sometime next year.
