The Montreal SPCA is backing down from its promise to suspend pound services for the city over its controversial new pit bull bylaw.
The animal welfare group had said it would end its dog service contracts with the Montreal boroughs it does business with, suggesting that taking in healthy pit bulls to possibly be euthanized went against their core principles.
It has now decided to temporarily extend its contracts borough to borough, and is up to negotiating new contracts, including services involving dogs.
Anita Kapuscinska with the animal welfare group says the change of tune has conditions, including the SPCA refusing to take any action regarding pit bulls, including euthanization.
Those contracts were to have expired on Friday, the deadline day for Montrealers to have their pit bull-type dogs registered.
