Reports suggest several people suffered injuries Tuesday after an escalator overloaded with soccer fans malfunctioned in Rome.
In frightening video footage making the rounds of social media, the broken escalator at the Repubblica subway stop is seen hurtling down at several times its normal speed, leaving people slamming into one another at the bottom.
Reports suggest those injured were fans of the Russian soccer club CSKA Moscow, who were in Rome for a Champions League match against Roma.
Photos taken after the incident show mangled metal plates at the bottom of the escalator.
The Italian news agency ANSA reports at least 20 people were hurt, suffering mainly leg injuries. Other reports suggest at least one of the injuries was serious.
