The original plans for a sandy beach along the waterfront behind the Verdun auditorium have been scrapped, after every bid from developers was rejected by the borough.
The borough rejected all bids from developers after the lowest came in at over $4.5 million, and 52 per cent higher than the original $3 million price tag estimated by Verdun.
The project now goes back to the drawing board; moving forward, the borough says that plans for a beach will be less ambitious, with noticeably fewer cascading gardens.
It remains unclear if Verdun Beach will be ready for this summer—it was originally meant to be open in time to coincide with celebrations for Montreal's 375th anniversary.
