The city of Montreal says it's on track to have over half a million households getting food waste collection services in two years.
The city began its program in 2015 with eight boroughs and 187,000 households in buildings with eight units and under. It's aiming for all 19 boroughs and 537,000 households by 2019. We're at around 60% now.
Another plan involving larger buildings and condo towers is expected next year.
The city has recruited renowned chef Martin Picard to help in the ad campaigns aimed at getting more Montrealers to dump their vegetable and fruit peels, eggshells, coffee grounds and meat and fish bones into the brown bin and not the garbage bin.
Between 2015 and 2016, over 29,000 tonnes of food waste were collected and composted, up from over 18,000 tonnes.
