A trio of videos posted to Facebook by a Montreal woman tell the story of her sister's final moments.
Stephanie Nini said goodbye to her sister Marisa last month after a long battle with colon cancer.
The mother of four opted for assisted dying, with the support of her family.
She invited them all and some friends to her bedside to enjoy her final days, which were filled with singing, smiles and laughter.
Stephanie posted those memories to Facebook, hoping to showing a different side of a story that has struck a chord for many, not just here in Montreal and Quebec, but around the world.
"I took the video because it was so beautiful to see my sister be so courageous," Nini told CTV Montreal. "I wanted to remember her with everyone loving her and with her smiles before leaving. I needed to have these souvenirs."
The moments captured and preserved on Facebook followed three rounds of chemo and several attempts at treatment using alternative medicine.
When nothing worked, Marissa said the pain had become too much.
"When she saw the chemo was too hard on her, she had no life quality," said Nini. "She told herself, 'I would rather have less time and a better life quality.'"
Reaction to the three videos, which have been watched about 3 million times, has been mostly positive.
"I've had a couple of people on Facebook saying it shouldn't be there, it should be private," Nini said. "That's an opinion. My opinion is, we see on the news all the time bad things. I think we need to see better things. Things we can relate to."
