Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and the mayor of the Cote-des-neiges-NDG borough, Russell Copeman, marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge by inaugurating ‘Vimy Place’ in NDG’s Girouard park.
“We need to remember and know these symbolic gestures are really strong,” Mayor Denis Coderre said.
Borough Mayor Russell Copeman was pleased the city chose his borough to memorialize the triumph at Vimy.

“I’m delighted that the city of Montreal is organizing its 100th anniversary commemoration here in our borough,” said CDN-NDG Mayor Copeman.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge began on April 9, 1917 and involved some 30,000 Canadians.
Although, Canada suffered about 11,000 casualties, the triumph at Vimy earned Canada a separate signature on the treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the First World War.
