Montreal's Inspector General Denis Gallant has asked the anti corruption police (UPAC) to investigate a waste disposal company for possible fraud.
At the same time the City of Montreal announced in a statement Monday morning that it has cancelled a $35 million dollar contract with Richelieu Environmental Services (S.E.R.).
The company had been hired to collect and dispose of garbage from homes and businesses in Verdun and the SouthWest borough, but an investigation turned up signs that the company may have also been paid by Montreal for garbage collected in five south shore communities.
The Journal de Montreal says after a one year investigation that included wiretaps and GPS location devices, investigators concluded that the company was billing Montreal for garbage that had been picked up in Brossard, Boucherville, Carignan, Saint-Basile-Le-Grand, McMasterville and Beloeil.
S.E.R had first been contracted by the City of Montreal in 2008.
