A Montreal cop is being hailed as a hero after saving a motorist from drowning under an overpass.
It happened early last Saturday morning, during a very heavy rainfall.
A car driving along Victoria Avenue in the Cote des Neiges district had to stop at an underpass for a traffic light and stalled as water suddenly rose around it.
The woman inside couldn't open her door or roll down the windows.
Patrol officer Rafael Beaulieu and his partner happened upon the scene. Beaulieu handed his partner his gun belt and swam to the car, smashed the back window with his billyclub and pulled the woman out. She couldn't swim, so he towed her to the edge of the pool that had formed under the overpass.
23-year old Beaulieu tells The Gazette that the water was so deep, he wasn't able to put his feet down.
The whole episode was witnessed by a couple in a nearby condo tower, who alerted the force to Beaulieu's actions.
