Montreal's mayor got his wish.
The city now has metropolis status thanks a unanimous vote in the National Assembly on Bill 121.
Among other things, the new status gives the city the power to extend bar hours, something Denis Coderre wants.
Coderre told Aaron Rand attaining the designatioin the day before the offical start of the election campaign is a concidence.
"It's not the first time that I'm talking about the status of the metropolis... the government said the first bill they would pass when it would come back to the National Assembly, (after the summer break), that would be it and they've done that today", said Coderre.
The bill was first tabled last December.
Montrealers go to the polls November 5th.
