A Laval couple is among many who have had to scramble to find a new wedding venue after theirs went bankrupt.
Casey Phillips and Roxanne Couston had put down a deposit to have their wedding at the Auberge Prema Shanti in Val David. Their wedding takes place on Saturday, and Phillips tells CTV he received a text message at 5 p.m. Wednesday indicating the venue had gone bankrupt.
Dozens of other couples reportedly received the same message and not only have to find a new venue, but find a way to get their deposits back. Trustees handling the case say the company that oversees weddings at the hotel was unable to provide services or have them properly insured.
Lawyer Jordan Charness says some couples may have a legal recourse as far as deposits are concerned because they could have been placed in a trust account and that the money is not really earned until a service has been provided.
Fortunately for Phillips and his bride-to-be, they were able to secure a new venue in Ste-Adele and are able to proceed with their wedding on schedule. Phillips says he hasn't had much time to think about getting his money back, as the couple is focused on the wedding and upcoming honeymoon. He says that while there is plenty of work to be done, there will be a happy ending.
