Warren Allmand served for 32 years as a Liberal MP and then 4 years as a city councillor in Montreal.
He's said to have sacrificed personally and professionally for always voting with his conscience.
"He worked until the end. He never stopped [fighting] for human rights," said Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion. "There are human beings today that are better off thanks to what Warren has done, especially against capital punishment, aboriginal rights and all universal rights."
Allmand was also an enthusiastic hockey player, hanging up his skates only a year before his death.
"Warren Allmand was a rights guy," said Senator Jim Munsen. "A person who believed in inclusion, inclusion, inclusion long before it was the cool or right thing to do."
Warren Allmand died on December 7th at age 84.
