Former Montreal executive committee chair Frank Zampino is under arrest again, and could face new fraud-related charges.
The UPAC anti-corruption unit issued a statement Tuesday morning, saying Zampino now faces fraud, breach of trust, and conspiracy charges in connection with $160 million worth of city contracts issued between 2001 and 2009.
Seven more people were, or are expected to be, placed under arrest shortly, including Bernard Trepanier, the former Union Montreal party fundraiser, who earned the infamous nickname Mr. 3%, for requiring construction companies to donate 3 per cent of any contract they won to the party.
Zampino — ex-mayor Gerald Tremblay's former right-hand man — is currently on trial in connection with the Faubourg Contrecoeur land deal, a parcel of land in the city's east end which was allegedly sold by the city to a developer at a discount.
