It was a long time coming, but Transport Quebec finally inaugurated a ramp that will take you from westbound Highway 20 directly to Trudeau airport.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday, attended by Transport Minister André Fortin and Dorval mayor Edgar Rouleau.
"It was called the bridge to nowhere, but now it goes somewhere, so I guess we're going to have to find another name," Rouleau said.
"If you want to have a world-class city anywhere in the world, you need direct road link from the airport to downtown," Fortin added.
The former 'overpass to nowhere' was first talked about more than a decade ago, as far back as 2005 — with the idea of linking the 20 and the airport, without having to travel through the Dorval Circle.
The process was bogged down by cost overruns running into the hundreds of millions of dollars, and lengthy delays, mainly as transport department officials negotiated with the owners of the lands on which the road link was eventually built — the CN and CP Railways, and the Dorval Best Western Hotel.
Among other things, the process was bogged down with negotiations between the CN and CP railways, as well as the Best Western Hotel.
