If you have a pit bull and live in Montreal, time is running out.
You need to have the dog registered as a pit bull by the end of the day on Friday.
If you don't, you could be fined $700 — and the city's Phillippe Sabourin says that's not all.
"If you haven't registered your pit bull by the first of April, the dog could be seized," he says.
Sabourin estimates around 1,200 dogs have already been registered, though the definition of what exactly a "pit bull-type dog" is continues to confuse some of the city's pet owners.
N.D.G. resident Gena Kona-Mancini has two rescue dogs — one of which looks like a pit bull, and she believes the other may be part pit bull.
While the city has been running pit bull identification clinics, she has not been able to get an appointment with a vet to confirm whether they fall under the city's definition.
“I have contacted vets and they don't want to ID dogs to you say if they are pit bulls or not,” she told CTV Montreal.
Mayor Denis Coderre says dog owners in Montreal have been given fair warning.
"We gave an extra three months, we've been talking about it all summer...you know, there's no surprise," he says.
The city says it won't put the dogs down, but they won't be allowed to stay in Montreal.
Kona-Mancini suggests she might consider moving to a place that's more accepting of her pets.
