Motorists who have a problem following the rules of the road be warned, there's a new set of eyes watching you.
Last week CN Rail police officers we were sworn in as special constables in the province of Quebec, giving them new powers as of October 1.
This gives the rail police the ability to enforce Highway Safety Code 500 metres around Canadian National property.
"We're just now at the level of the other provinces in Canada" CN police officer Pierre Bergeron told CTV Montreal.
Bergeron, who has more than 20 years experience, has seen a lot of rule breaking in his time, some instances have stood out more than others.
"A person with a stroller going underneath a train" he said.
Now CN police officers will work alongside the Montreal police department and issue tickets to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists for road infractions, and not just the ones related to trains.
"Use of cell phone, speeding, obviously, it's a cause of accidents. Not respecting the signs, the lights, the gates, these are things we can see often. Being stopped on the railway crossing themselves" Bergeron said.
Even with the new powers, Bergeron and other officers will continue their attempts to crack down on the most common and most deadly offence, trespassing.
Last year 46 people were killed while trespassing on rail property, 16 more than in 2015.
