Two of the three branches of the privately-funded Montreal Children's Library will be closing down — unless it can come up with a long-term funding solution.
In ten days, the location at the corner of Pierce St. and Ste. Catherine St. in the Shaughnessy Village is slated to close, and another one, located in the Tyndale St. Georges Community Centre in Little Burgundy, might have to close by the end of the year.
Only one branch will be left open, in St. Michel.
The institution gets about a third of its funding from the city, with private donations accounting for the rest.
"We would need people to also contribute on a regular basis. We wouldn't have to have just enough money for one year. We really need something that's sustainable, so we really need someone, and people, to contribute on a sustainable basis in order to continue the way it is," said executive director Helen Kyne.
Kyne says each branch needs about $70,000 a year to keep running.
