CAA-Quebec representatives will present a brief to a National Assembly committee today calling for stiffer penalties for motorists who talk or text on their cell phones while behind the wheel.
A spokesman for the organization tells the Journal de Montreal that penalties have to be increased.
CAA-Quebec is not calling for higher fines, but wants more demerit points for offenders.
Current fines range from $80 to $100 and four demerit points.
The lobby group says the range of fines is adequate but they are recommending that if a repeat offence occurs within two years of the first one the number of demerit points issued should be increased to six.
A third offence would result in an automatic suspension of the driver's permit.
