For many on Saturday night, it was sleepless in Saint-Henri.
Demolition and reconstruction of the Turcot interchange has been ongoing, but according to St-Jacques St. resident Phil Boudreau, it was particularly unbearable this weekend.
“I worked at the airport for four years – I can equate it to airport-level noises. It’s that loud,” he admitted in an interview with CTV News. “You feel as if you’re in a club; you can feel it pounding on your chest inside the apartments.”
A nearby noise meter showed through most of the overnight the sound level in the area was above the permitted noise levels, sometimes reaching 85 decibels on the dBA logarithmic scale—roughly as loud to the human ear as being beside a garbage disposal in operation.
Eileen Holowka said the recent noise is the loudest that the construction has ever been.
“It’s just a constant banging noise with pauses in the middle, just enough to drive you absolutely crazy,” she said. “Every time you’ve got the rhythm down, it takes a nice pause and starts up again."
