The 21-year-old Montreal man suspected of killing two people and trying to kill two others in Pointe-aux-Trembles on Sunday night will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see if he is fit to be arraigned and to stand trial.
Frédérick Gingras will be sent to the Pinel Psychiatric Institute for the five day assessment. His case returns to court next week.
Gingras is charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Gingras, wearing a dark blue shirt and sporting a beard, appeared briefly in court via video conference from the Rivière-des-Prairies detention centre. He appeared calm and alert, saying hello to jail guards and asking questions to the court.
Gingras' lawyer, Kaven Morasse, said he requested the evaluation after speaking with his client. He also cited Gingras' past mental health issues that he said he has to analyze along with the evidence he's received so far.
Crown prosecutor Catherine Perreault said she requested Gingras not be allowed to communicate with a list of people including witnesses and relatives of the victims.
A man was arrested following a crime spree Sunday night in Pointe-aux-Trembles that ended with two people dead and whose cars were stolen in the suspect's attempt to flee. The police chase ended on the South Shore near the Dix30 shopping centre.
