Speeding in a school zone is something that happens on a daily basis almost everywhere, but one young man in Nova Scotia may have set the high score Wednesday.
The Halifax Regional Police department said a Chevrolet Camaro was clocked at 200 km/h on Highway 102 north of Halifax. An officer tried to pull the vehicle over for driving twice the speed limit, but it did not slow down and managed to get away.
Not long after the same car was spotted in nearby Bedford, hitting speeds of 192 km/h on Rocky Lake Drive, near Rocky Lake Junior High School.
“We don’t normally see speeds close to four times over the posted speed limit,” Const. Kristine Fraser, spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Police, told CTV Atlantic.
The Camaro managed to give police the slip despite a road block being setup. The same vehicle was later spotted crossing the solid median line into the oncoming lane to pass.
In the end police managed to catch the driver with the need for speed while he was stopped at a gas station, approximately 15 minutes after the chase began.
Marshall Ellis, 20, of Elderbank, N.S., was arrested and later charged with dangerous driving and fleeing police. He was also given two tickets for an expired registration and operating a motor vehicle without a liability policy.
