The man was a French national originally from Cameroon and he vanished while on an an extended visit to Montreal in 2014.
La Presse says the theory now is that Eric Saturnin Emenenguene was running an on-line scam, and may have been murdered by some of his angry victims.
Investigators are asking the public for help as they unravel what he was doing during his final days. The 32-year old had been living in an apartment in Montreal's east-end Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.
A spokesperson with Montreal police would not comment on the La Presse report, saying they have no new information on the case.
