Early Saturday morning Kahnawake Peacekeepers received a call around 3am about a violent car crash in a quiet residential neighbourhood of Kahnawake.
A vehicle carrying six people - three men and three women - hit a guardrail at high speed and spun out-of-control before slamming into two parked cars on Veterans Boulevard.
When Peacekeepers arrived at the scene of the crash, the vehicle with the passengers had caught fire and nearby residents were trying to get people out.
Peacekeepers’ spokesperson Dave Lahache confirmed to CJAD 800 that the men in the vehicle are residents of Kahnawake and the women are from outside the community.
Two men died in the crash, but it’s uncertain whether they died from the impact of the crash or were overcome by the fire. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the causes of death.
Meantime, the three women were transported to two separate hospitals for treatment. One of them is in a coma and fighting for her life.
“One of the victims was transported immediately to the Montreal General Hospital , which is a trauma unit for the Montreal area,” said Peacekeepers spokesperson, Dave Lahache.
The two other victims were transported to Anna-Laberge Hospital in Châteauguay.
“Then Anna-Laberge sent one of the victims to the Montreal General, which would indicate the injuries were more severe,” said Lahache.
The male driver suffered less serious injuries and was taken to the station for questioning by Peacekeepers.
Speed was “a contributing factor” to the accident and the investigation - supported by the SQ - will also examine whether alcohol or drugs play a part in this tragedy.
