After all the treats has been handed out and kids all over Montreal are in their candy coma, one of the city’s longest running costume shops will pack up its Halloween stock for the final time.
Malabar first opened in the 1930s. It moved to its current location on Parc Ave. in 1994 after owner Susan Cohene bought the business a year earlier.
All of the stores costumes are made by hand, which in today's world can be a little slow for new customers.
“Times have changed, people want everything tomorrow,” owner Susan Cohene told CTV Montreal. “Everybody is in a hurry. This is a business at a little slower pace.”
Not only was there a demand for faster delivery, Cohene said just started feeling out of the loop.
“In the last couple of years, people would call and they would ask me for costumes that I never heard of,” she said. “I said, ‘Wow, that’s a sign that it’s just not for me anymore.’”
Instead of renting out costumes like she normally would, Cohene is looking to clear it all out by selling the stock before Halloween. She said she has plans to donate leftovers to theatre schools or different organizations.
The will close for good this December.
