A 72-year-old Valleyfield man has been formally charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of his former spouse.
Reports say Alain Castonguay was getting back together with Johanne Chayer, 65, after getting divorced in 1994.
Castonguay is also charged with four counts of attempted murder of four police officers.
Chayer's body was found at a home in Valleyfield Tuesday night.
Police say they were called to that home following a 911 call for a domestic dispute.
They say when they arrived, someone fired shots at them. One officer was hit in the lower body. He is recovering in hospital.
Castonguay appeared via video conference from the Valleyfield detention centre. He looked calm, wearing a white prison inmate jumpsuit and his white hair mussed.
Family members were seen in court looking distressed and clutching each other's hands. One could be heard sobbing.
Crown prosecutor Hélène Langis told reporters she met with the daughters of the victim and the accused.
"It's very hard for them. They're in a very, very difficult situation so it's very hard," Langis told reporters.
Defence lawyer Jacques Vinet said he met briefly with his client who was "able to answer his questions."
Vinet said he needs time to get all the evidence so the next court date is scheduled at the end of the month. Castonguay remains detained.
