Montreal police say the womans fall was accidental and happened around 830 Saturday evening.

A 30-year-old woman fell about 60 feet (just over 18 metres) to her death in Old Montreal on Saturday night. The accident happened on Saint-François-Xavier Street, between Saint-Paul and Notre-Dame streets, but police will not specify exactly where.

Montreal police say the woman's fall was accidental and happened about 8:30pm Saturday evening. It seems she was trying to retrieve a lost item when she fell.  Urgences-santé tried to revive the woman, but she died of her injuries at the scene.

Around 11:00pm, a few police officers were seen in the lobby of the Hôtel Bonaparte on Saint-François-Xavier Street.

Inside, hotel staff refused to answer questions from The Canadian Press while in front of the hotel, tourists and passers-by were discussing the incident.

Brett Henning, a visiting American who had a drink in the restaurant opposite the hotel, told The Canadian Press that he had seen about 15 police cars arrive in a few minutes. "Twenty policemen were running in the street and they rushed inside the hotel."

Tourists who sat at a restaurant in front of the hotel at the time of the accident said they had not seen anyone on the street before the police arrived.
