A man suspected of perpetrating a scam involving phony tickets to the upcoming Montreal show by pop star Pink has turned himself into police.
Montreal police tweeted the news on Monday morning, and thanked people for their help in spreading the story.
Last week, resports surfaced about a woman who lost $520 after responding to an ad on the popular web site Kijiji for tickets to Pink's Bell Centre show on March 23.
After she met with the man and gave him the cash in exchange for the phony tickets, she realized something was not quite right about the tickets. She also noticed the Kijiji ad had not been taken down from the web site.
A friend of the woman's also responded to the ad a short time later.
Police say ticket scams like this are common, especially for popular or sold-out shows, and they're urging people who might consider buying tickets online to consider a few safety tips:
• Always buy tickets in person, and if possible, take someone with you when you go and buy;
• Try to arrange to meet somewhere where it's possible to verify the ticket's authenticity (like the actual box office, for instance);
• Ask for the original receipts;
• Check the information on the ticket (date, time and place of the event)
• Don't succumb to pressure on the part of the ticket seller;
• Don't hand the seller cash until you the tickets are in your hands.
