A young man is missing in the water after tripping and falling into the Riviere des Prairies along the shore in Pierrefonds on Sunday evening, police say.
"According to information obtained from witnesses, the man aged in his 20s fell into the river [near Riviera St. in Pierrefonds] and from there, was taken by the current heading east," Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Couture said.
It remains unclear how the man fell or what he was doing. A 911 call came in reporting the incident around 6 p.m.
The Canadian Coast Guard, Montreal police and the fire departments of Laval and Montreal were out for several hours, scouring the river looking for the young man, before the search was suspended because of darkness.
Efforts to locate the man will resume Monday morning.
Police also tell CJAD 800 News it hasn't been decided whether divers will be called in to search below the surface, turning this from a rescue mission into a recovery for a body.
