Quebec Solidaire's Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois has responded after a Canadian Armed Forces veteran posted a letter to his Facebook account this week denouncing the MNA for wearing what appeared to be a white poppy on top of a red one.
Nadeau-Dubois tells Le Soleil that the poppies may have overlapped, but there was no intent to prioritize one over the other.
He was also surprised to hear of the criticism, and says other Quebec Solidaire MNAs have been wearing both poppies over the past decade, and will continue to do so.
Jonathan Wade has served in Afghanistan and was also a part of a 2010 peace mission to Haiti and wrote a letter on Nadeau-Dubois' Facebook page on Tuesday. In it, Wade says that while he has no issues with anyone wearing a white poppy, he takes exception to it being worn as a potential political statement.
Nadeau-Dubois says wearing both poppies ensures that no one is forgotten and that the gesture broadens the purpose of Remembrance Day.
