Police in Laval say they've caught up with a man they had been looking for in connection with a drone that was found on the rooftop of a home in Chomedey in July.
On Tuesday, police released a photo that had been found on the drone, and announced they were looking for the man in the photo, who they believe was its owner.
The three-pound device in question was found on the roof of a home in Chomedey on July 23. It apparently ran out of power.
Laval police spokesperson Eveylne Boudreau says they have no reason to believe the drone, or its owner, were involved in anything criminal, but the police department is taking the opportunity to remind people that drone operators have strict rules to follow — especially since such devices have proven to be popular Christmas gifts.
For one thing, drone owners need to undergo Transport Canada-approved training, be properly insured, and keep the drones far enough away from cars and airports. The area where the drone was found is close to Highway 13, and close to an air corridor used by commercial pilots.
"He has to not fly over autoroutes, and not fly over crowds," Boudreau says. "He has to have his name an address written on the drone itself."
