It was a long night for Montreal firefighters as they worked to clean up the mess after a tanker truck overturned on the westbound Highway 40 service road in Pointe-aux-Trembles.
The truck toppled over at about 7:30 P.M. just after the St-Jean-Baptiste Blvd. exit.
One of the truck's four tanks, carrying about 15,000 litres of diesel, sprang a leak, spilling about two litres of fuel per minute.
It took a couple hours to get the leak under control. The fire department's hazardous materials team spread an absorbent powder to contain the spill and avoid it from spreading into the ground or sewer system.
At about 3:35 A.M. the fire department announced its team had completed the cleanup. The Highway remained closed as Environment Ministry crews continued to go over the scene and work began to turn the truck upright, which could have caused another spill or fire.
The Highway reopened shortly before 4:30 A.M.
The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.
