A late afternoon gas leak was capped around the supper hour on Thursday.
The Eaton Centre was evacuated as a precaution due to the incident at Ste Catherine and McGill College Avenue.
The building housing the former Les Ailes de la Mode and the office building located on top at 1500 Robert Bourassa were also evacuated.
Reports say neighbouring buildings such as Place Montreal Trust were also affected.
The Montreal fire department called in a second alarm.
At least one report said work crews in the area that were digging ruptured a 4-inch pipe.
The metro running along the Green Line didn't stop at McGill because of the leak.
