The downtown Ville-Marie borough has an explanation for a contradictory juxtaposition of street signs at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Towers Sts.
Just below a one-way sign for Towers St., a new sign was put up banning motorists from turning in the same direction as the one-way sign — leaving locals wondering how they could access the block-long street if they can't legally turn on it.
A Twitter user, @Captain2396, apparently was the first one to call attention to the apparent goof on social media.
City spokesperson Anik de Repentigny says the issue is tied to upcoming work by the STM on a mechanical ventilation system — similar to the kind of work happening now on Bishop St., a few blocks to the east.
The work was supposed to begin by the end of summer 2017, but that work has been delayed.
De Repentigny says they're aware of the problem, and they say at some point — if it hasn't been already — the sign will be covered over until the work begins. Once it does, traffic will run south on Towers St. instead of north, with the street accessible only from De Maisonneuve Blvd.
Please explain this...NO LEFT TURN from Ste Catherine a 1 way eastbound to Towers st another 1 way. So how the hell do we get on Towers? pic.twitter.com/UpFWsiLsNM
