The Université de Montréal has installed a winding, 215-metre stretch of fabric tempo tunnels atop a hillside path from the school's métro station up to campus. Many are complaining about the unattractive solution to a problem the university has had to face as winter approaches.
Normally, students make it up the hill to campus during the winter through an underground tunnel. That's not an option this year, though: it's been under construction for months, with work unexpectedly running into the winter.
UdeM spokeswoman Genevieve O'Meara explains that the tempo shelters went up to make the outdoor pathway safe for students this winter. "It’s up the hill, so it’s kind of difficult to maintain with the snow (and ice)," O'Meara said. The tempos are also equipped with internal lighting fixtures, so they're accessible at any time of the day.
The university says that the cost for the shelters are included within the $10.9 million bill for the tunnel renovations.
