The only hockey being played in Laval this winter could be at the Place Bell by the Rocket.
The union representing the 750 blue collar workers of Quebec's third largest city said it will begin an unlimited strike starting December 9.
If no deal can be reached before then the strike will force, among other things, the complete closure of the eight arenas in the city, forcing thousands of amateur hockey players and figure skaters to find new places to practice what they love.
In a statement vice-president of SCFP 4545 Stéphane Lavoie said pay equity with other municipal employees remains at the heart of their demands. He said some progress has been made on other issues, but representatives from the city continue to make demands that would impair working conditions.
The blue collar workers have been without a collective agreement since January 2016.
A mediator was appointed in August and while there were several meetings no agreement could be reached. Negotiations have been at a standstill since the union walked away from the bargaining table in September.
The city said it is looking at all available options to ensure families are not hurt by the strike and has invited the union to begin a new round of negotiations.
