Montreal firefighters responded to calls about smoke and flames from the top floor of a Côte-des-Neiges apartment building early Saturday morning.
Calls to 9-1-1 began a bit after 8:00am.
A fire department spokesperson says several residents had to be evecuated from the building, but that there were no serious injuries.
The three-alarm fire was reportedly started in a top floor unit by a woman who had fallen asleep after lighting some incense.
A fire official said the woman woke up due to the heat of the fire and tried unsuccessfully to put it out. She suffered only a minor burn before escaping the building.
The Red Cross was on-site quickly with an STM bus for residents to seek shelter in, away from the early morning cold of minus-one degree.
Fire officials say the building is "not a total write-off," but notied it suffered siginificant water damage and will require significant repairs.
