Quebec's human rights tribunal has ruled against two people who used offensive racial slurs against black people.
Two separate rulings early this month ordered two Montrealers be paid $4,000 and $6,500 after being called the N-word. One, a Bell customer service representative named Marius Tchakounte Nyassa, heard the word used towards him by an exasperated customer named Serge Levasseur in March of 2013.
Normand Rivard, meanwhile, called a black tenant the slur during an altercation over the phone with Lucner St-Eloi in April of 2015.
Both cases were heard by Judge Mario Gervais. He called the two men's statements "shocking" and "outrageous."
In interviews with La Presse, St-Eloi and a lawyer for Nyassa both expressed satisfaction with the rulings.
