This weekend the jack-hammer comes down on the next leg of the Turcot interchange.
On Sunday, the exit from highway 20 to the 720 east will drop down to 1 lane.
In mid-November closures get far more complex as the 720 east is torn down and replaced with the new 136.
While branches will be demolished and rerouted over the next 2 years, the transport ministry urges drivers to seek other modes of transportation.
"We're counting on road users and motorists to change their behaviour: use public transit, trains, busses, metros," says Sarah Bensadoun with Transport Quebec. "We're adding service, and it's the only way... Otherwise you will be stuck in traffic for a very long time and we want to avoid that at much as possible."
The STM has purchased 25 new busses for the occasion and is adding service to 13 lines to accommodate new users, the green metro line will get the equivalent of another train of service during rush hour.
Sandra Sultana with the Transport Ministry says they had also hoped to increase commuter train service, but were unsuccessful.
"There have been negotiations however there wasn't any possibility to increase the train de banlieue," she says. "It is partly CP it is also what's available in terms of equipment."
Officials say some drivers will have to detour through St Henri which will reprogram their traffic lights for the increased flow, but they hope most drivers will opt for public transit at least until work in done in 2 years.
