While appearing on the popular Radio-Canada talk show Tout le monde en parle this evening, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that his government could cancel a major arms contract with Saudi Arabia amidst the fallout of the Kingdom's suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The $15 billion contract for the sale of light armoured vehicles to the Middle Eastern nation was made by the former Harper Government, but was not cancelled by the Trudeau Liberals once they took power three years ago.
Trudeau said that "there are clauses in the contract that must be followed" in relation to what the Canadian products being sold to the country can be used for. "If they do not follow these clauses, we will definitely cancel the contract," he said.
He added that Canada will "always defend human rights, including with Saudi Arabia".
Current regulations in Canada on the sale of arms and other military equipment to foreign countries prohibit their use on civilians.
